HOW DOES THE PORTLAND CHAPTER BENEFIT ME?
Our Portland chapter carries forward important work engaging local communities, advocating fair and diverse news coverage and providing professional development and networking opportunities.
Each year, we host a panel discussion with Asian American state political leaders and reporters and tour of the state Capitol. We also lead media access workshops at AsiaFest to help AAPIs learn how to contact and work with local media and get their message out.
AAJA-Portland funds summer journalism internships for Asian Americans, not only creating an extra position at local media outlets but bringing in a person of color in a period in which ethnic representation has shrunken drastically.
We participate in career fairs for Asian American youth, judge the Chinese American Citizens Alliance’s scholarship contest, and host and participate in mixers and networking events.
Membership is $65/year for Full and Associate members and $25/year for Student members.
Full membership is available to those who work in journalism. Associate membership is available to former journalists, public affairs representatives of news companies, and non-journalists who have particular expertise to offer AAJA. Student membership is available to high school, undergraduate, or graduate students who intend to pursue a career in journalism.
