Welcome! We are a professional organization dedicated to improving the visibility of Asian American/Pacific Islander issues in the media, promoting and training AAPIs in the newsroom and strengthening ties between news networks and our AAPI communities in Oregon.
We are a local chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association and composed mostly of AAPI journalists (though, as some of our members will tell you, we are very open-minded and enlist members who are neither of those things!)
Each year, the Portland chapter hosts a panel discussion with Asian American state political leaders and reporters and tour of the state Capitol. We also lead media access workshops at AsiaFest to help AAPIs learn how to contact and work with local media and get their message out.
AAJA-Portland funds summer journalism internships for Asian Americans, not only creating an extra position at local media outlets but bringing in a person of color in a period in which ethnic representation has shrunken drastically.
We participate in career fairs for Asian American youth, judge the Chinese American Citizens Alliance’s scholarship contest, and host and participate in mixers and networking events.
