Support a fellow Asian organization

Wouldn’t it be nice to support a great cause just by going out for a nice Chinese dinner?

Here’s your chance. The Portland chapter of the Chinese American Citizens Alliance is holding its annual scholarship banquet at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at Wong Kee restaurant, 28 NW 4th St. in Portland.

Come out and support the students who will receive Fred G. Lee Memorial Scholarships, handed out every year to high school seniors from Oregon or Clark County who have demonstrated excellence in academics and community service. AAJA-Portland helped judge the scholarship competition this year, so we can tell you that the winners are quite impressive.

Don’t forget to vote!

No, not in the Oregon primary. That’s over.

We’re talking about the elections for AAJA’s national officers.

Usually, these races are uncontested and therefore about as exciting as sitting alone in your convention hotel room trying to find something to watch on TV while everyone else is down at karaoke.

But this year, we have TWO candidates for national treasurer. Their statements indicate different views on the direction AAJA should take.

So, read the statements, then cast your ballot.  If you’re a member in good standing, you should have received an electronic ballot by now. Those need to be filled out by July 9.

Paper ballots are available, too. Request an absentee ballot from Antonio Salas: (415) 346-2051 or AntonioS@aaja.org.

Or vote in person at UNITY. Ballots may be obtained and cast at the registration area during registration hours at the McCormick Place West Convention Center in Chicago, starting Wednesday, July 23. Polls close Friday, July 25 at 2 p.m. The winners will be announced at the gala banquet that night.

Remember: If you don’t vote, you can’t complain!
